Valentine's Day

Sophia made a Valentine for a boy at school that is her friend.  Not boyfriend, friend.  They enjoy daydreaming and drawing and playing games using their vivid imaginations.  Neither of them really understands the concept of boyfriends and girlfriends but a few of their classmates teased them about their friendship and encouraged them to be boyfriend/girlfriend.  Luckily I am close with his mother and we both encouraged them to remain friends, and ignore the other kids, which they have done a good job of doing.  However, Sophia made a Valentine's Day card at Brownies and wanted to make hers for him.  Then Tessa wanted to give his little brother something, but definitely NOT a Valentine, so she coloured in a Christmas picture.  I suppose if you want something to definitely NOT be a Valentine, a Christmas card fits that description!  She is very funny because she has had several boys at school tell her they like her and want to be her boyfriend, but she always responds that she will be their friend if they are nice, but she does NOT want a boyfriend!  (Yeah, Tessa!)
Sophia and Tessa are ready to deliver their Valentines.

The card Sophia made...her first Valentine for a boy (besides the ones you give to everybody in class in America-they don't do that here!)

This is the inside of Sophia's card, with a chocolate ladybird attached.
Tessa's Christmas picture, also with a chocolate ladybird!

All the Valentine's Day goodies!  Tutu sent Hello Kitty banks filled with lychee and other fruit jellies, lots of cute clothes, slippers, leg warmers, books, chocolates, yummy pancake mix, all kinds of goodies!

The girls were super exctied!

They gave me a necklace as a Valentine's Day/early birthday present...it is beautiful and the girls helped to pick it out!

Tessa in her new clothes from Tutu, with Daddy!

Sophia and Tessa in new clothes, me with my necklace, a lovely picture except my skin colour is bizarre!  But I really don't look so weird and all the other pictures we took weren't so good overall, so I will post my weird face picture anyway!

My new necklace; it is a beautiful blue with a diamond in the middle.

The girls tried out some of my chocolate!

Happy Birthday Chuckolate!

For Daddy's birthday, we wanted to make him a cake.  The girls really wanted to try out the giant cupcake pan we had gotten from a friend and make a giant chocolate cupcake.  However, he likes cheesecake and I had just recieved a recipe for a no-bake raspberry lemon cheesecake from my lovely cousin Lindsay that I wanted to try!  So I put the two together and made this!
Giant chocolate cupcake filled with raspberry lemon cheesecake filling and topped with fresh raspberries!

Yummy!

Snow day!

It snows here occasionally, but the snow is often gone before you have fully planned a snowman in your mind, much less tried to build one.  Luckily, one night it started snowing and didn't stop.  We woke up on Sunday to snow, glorious snow.  I am not the biggest fan of wet, cold things in general, but one or two snow days a year are delightful!  We didn't have a sledge (sled in America!) so Chuckolate bundled up and headed out to see if the local stores would be open and whether they would have sold out their stock of sledges (which they rather optimistically had purchased!).  We were in luck!

We came home from a friend's house Saturday night and there was already enough snow for a quick snow angel.

Our house in the snow!

Our garden Buddha in the snow

This is our back garden, with the girls' playhouse and the conservatory behind it.

Tessa checked on her leftover plants from last summer; still green!

Sophia stands on the shovel, thinking it is like her pogo stick!

Tessa's first snow angel, ever.

Sophia has done it before (last night and in NM).

The new snow shovel- but what's that Daddy is getting out of the car?

Daddy is going to pull the girls on their sledge to a nearby field.

Whee!

After we each takes turns pulling the sledge, it is Sophia's turn but soon Tessa is off.

Tessa and Daddy try out the sledge on a little hill at the field, perfect for sledding!

She wasn't sure about it at first, but decided she liked it!

That's me in the bright pink, and Tessa sliding down.

After numerous turns up and down the hill, Sophia was still having fun but Tessa was coooooooold!  So Tessa and I headed home, normally a 10 minute walk but probably twice that in the snow with a tired, cold four year old.  In addition, halfway home she had to pee but all I could do was help her hurry home.  Then we got home and discovered I had no keys and no mobile phone!  So we waited with her legs tightly shut until Daddy and Sophia came home!  Luckily they came home fairly soon after us and Tessa was easily distracted by cleaning the snow off of the cars and shoveling the driveway and playing in the snow in other ways.
While Tessa and I made hot chocolate and warmed up by the radiators, Sophia and Daddy made a snowman!

She was very proud!

Then they built a mini hill in the back garden because she really wanted to try the sledge again!

Whee! (Don't forget to steer away from the house!)

Belated present

Living overseas means waiting on mail.  Living with an APO means it isn't as bad, you may think.  You would be wrong.  Sometimes things come quickly and other times they take forever.  Other times they do not come at all.  Planning on mail is simply impossible.  As an adult, I can understand and accept that fact.  My children, however, do not.  Especially when the younger sister's Christmas present from Grandpa arrives in time for Christmas and the older sister's present doesn't arrive at all.  Sophia is old enough now to understand that Grandpa bought them both at the same time and hoped they would arrive at the same time, but jealousy still rules her world.  Luckily, Grandpa was able to cancel the first (two!) orders and try for a third time with a UK company that shipped it to us in a few days.  After I pointed out to Sophia that it is the thought that counts and technically her Christmas would last longer than her sister's, she was less jealous.

Once she received and opened her present, she was delighted.  And now, she is obsessed.  With what?  Harry Potter.  I decided that she should only read the first five books and save the last two for another year (or so).  Then I realized she was reading them too fast so I had her write a book report for the third book before she could continue.  She wrote it and then finished the first five and then read them again.  Then she read them again but in a random order.  Then she read them again but skipping through some parts while savoring others.  She still goes through stacks of library books and a chapter book a day from school and all the other books on her shelf, but she goes back to Harry Potter daily.

And randomly, she will ask, "Mom, what is the defense against the dark arts teacher in the last two books?  Can you just tell me that?" or "Wouldn't it be cool if I could sleep at school and eat in the Great Hall?"  She will stop reading and run to read me a line that she found funny, or interesting, or is an example of foreshadowing (she doesn't know the word, but she definitely knows the concept!).  Here are the photos from when she first received the books, after impatiently waiting since Christmas.  Her Grandpa pointed out that Tessa's expressions lose interest in the present as she realizes it is a bunch of books without pictures.  It is a humorous progression as Sophia gets happier and happier and Tessa gets less and less enthused, so I included all the photos.

Sleepover with Katelyn

Sophia was thrilled to have a sleepover with her friend Katelyn, from NM! Considering her last sleepover's success, I was a bit wary but she is a bit older now and doing it at our house helped me to not worry about her at least.

Sophia and Katelyn had a lot of fun, only a few moments of being cross with one another, made an incredible fort, and even allowed Tessa to join in sometimes.  Going to bed took awhile, as they were whispering and giggling, but eventually they settled down and slept, without much of a fuss.  The next day we decided to go to the Memorial Park in Newmarket to play for awhile before lunch.
